Southie Is My Hometown, Episode 200

There were many larger than life South Boston characters making news through the years. People like: Stanley Blinstrub, owner of the most popular nightclub in Boston, Blinstrubs on West Broadway; School Committee Chairman Louise Day Hicks who opposed the Forced School Busing disaster vigorously; and of course, Senate President Billy Bulger who led the televised, annual South Boston St. Patrick’s Day Political Breakfast just before the best St. Pat’s Parade in the nation. His acerbic but hilarious comments were legendary. One of his funny jingles was, “We don’t raise geraniums. We raise Lithuanians.” There was a recognized Lithuanian population in South Boston also. Another of his quips was this one; “When I die, I want to be buried at the Gate of Heaven Church Cemetery so I can remain politically active”. And Billy Bulger’s brother was Whitey Bulger, the Irish Mafia boss. I know Bill Bulger and I like him. He is an accomplished and decent guy. I met Whitey Bulger and think differently about him.
